David Corley - Available Light, album review

Spit Storytelling

Aged 53, this is David Corley’s debut album, and the folk-rock songs have, not surprisingly, a weathered sound and content with ruminations on real and imagined life that would seem to have been lived through considerable introspection. His singing is a grizzled cross between Mark Lanegan and Tony Joe White, and there is a rawish tinge to their performance/production that may come with the confidence of having lived in them for some time. More spit than polish. These are accompanied with the similar loose but fresh vocal support and harmonies of Kate Fenner and Sarah McDermott. It is storytelling with the kind of edge that makes it real.
